County Fair Charity Fundraiser

Poster Design by Kathy Mueller

Cocktails Against Cancer hosts an annual fundraising event to raise donations for its beneficiaries. The 2015 event theme was county fair. This two color silkscreen poster hung around the city and invited guests to learn a square dance and sip gut warming cocktails for a good cause. The design references a vintage indigo bandana and incorporates the symbol of the awareness ribbon into the print.

The County Fair Charity Fundraiser, designed by Kathy Mueller, is a captivating poster that served as a promotional tool for a fundraising event organized by Cocktails Against Cancer. Held annually, this event aims to raise donations for various charitable causes. In 2015, the theme of the event was county fair, and the poster perfectly captured the essence of this theme.

The design of the poster draws inspiration from vintage indigo bandanas, which have become a symbol of Americana. By incorporating the symbol of the awareness ribbon into the print, Kathy Mueller successfully communicates the charitable nature of the event. The two-color silkscreen print on French Pop-Tone Whip Cream paper adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the design.

Measuring approximately 25 cm x 50 cm, the poster was strategically placed in cafes and boutiques around Philadelphia to attract the attention of potential attendees. Its eye-catching design and clever messaging invited guests to learn a square dance and enjoy heartwarming cocktails, all in support of a good cause.

During the design process, Kathy Mueller conducted thorough research to ensure the poster effectively conveyed the county fair theme. Visual research on vintage bandanas, particularly those made by The Elephant Brand, provided inspiration for the overall aesthetic. Additionally, typography research focused on wood type broadsides posters, a symbol of Americana, with references to historic foundries and printing presses such as Hamilton Wood Type and Hatch Show Print.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was to position the event as a fun and enjoyable evening while emphasizing its charitable nature. By incorporating elements of the county fair theme and using vibrant colors, Kathy Mueller successfully communicated the event's fun factor and established its value as a charitable event.

The County Fair Charity Fundraiser poster, designed and printed in Philadelphia, was hung around the city in early August, a month and a half before the event. Its presence in various establishments created anticipation and generated interest among the community.

This exceptional design by Kathy Mueller was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious award celebrates outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that contribute to quality of life improvements. The County Fair Charity Fundraiser poster exemplifies the fusion of art, design, and technology, making a positive impact on society.
